Undergraduate Programs
Studying Theology is an excellent gateway to a range of career options. While many students will be seeking to serve the church in ministry and mission, many will be lay Christians who want to be more informed about the Christian faith in order to serve God more effectively in a range of vocations. Within this category, students will be preparing for service in NGOs, government civil service and in the business world.
Bishop Gwynne School of Theology offers programs that are accessible to students with a wide range of educational backgrounds and professional and personal circumstances: many will be mature students, many will be employed and therefore studying part time through evening classes, many will be in active ministry, while still others will be pursuing the programme as full time residential students preparing to be ordained in the Episcopal Church of South Sudan.
Bachelor of Arts in Theology
The BA in Theology is a four-year program when studied full-time. It will deepen your understanding of the Bible, Christian discipleships, worship, mission, ethics and pastoral ministry.
This program equips students for leadership in the church and a range of other contexts – in the public, private. non-governmental and governmental sectors.
Diploma of Arts in Theology
The Diploma in Theology is a three-year program when studied full-time. It is designed to equip lay and ordained church leaders as well as to provide a good higher education background for a variety of career options in administration, non-governmental, private and public sectors
Certificate of Arts in Theology
The Certificate in Theology is a two-year program when studied full-time. It provides students with a strong foundation of understanding of the Christian faith that can be applied to personal discipleship as well as ethical leadership in a range of vocations.
There is residential accommodation for theology students who live outside Juba. All programs are available as a full-time day program, and as a part-time evening program.
Classes for the full-time day program take place from 8.30 am to 3.00 pm from Monday to Friday, with occasional extra classes on Saturdays.
Classes for the part-time evening program take place from 4.00 pm to 7.00 pm from Monday to Friday, with occasional extra classes on Saturdays.
Teaching Staff
Revd Abraham Maker Akur Kou
Revd Abraham Maker Akur Kou oversees all the administrative and academic affairs of BGST. He has served the University since 2013 when it was still Bishop Gwynne College, as a librarian, and as a college registrar. When the College became the University’s School of Theology, Revd Abraham was appointed University Chaplain and became Dean two years later. Rev’d Abraham Maker has a first degree from School of Management, University of Juba, a Bachelor of Theology from the Pentecostal Theological Seminary, Cairo, and a Master of Divinity in Theological Studies, from Africa International University, Kenya. He has a PhD in Theology from Uganda Christian University.
Revd Philip Lomoro John Benjamin
Revd Philip Lomoro John Benjamin is from Lainya County, Central Equatoria State. He worked as a teacher in Juba Diocese before pursuing his theology studies at George Whitefield College Cape town, where he was awarded his Bachelor’s Degree in Theology. After two years as Assistant Lecturer at the Bishop Gwynne School of Theology, Revd Philip took up the additional responsibilities of Academic Registrar in the School of Theology.
Revd Dr James Aruma
Revd Dr James Aruma Ilarious joined TEU in March 2022, after having taught for 18 years in Paul University, Institute of Theology Awka and for 2 years in Nnanmdi Azikiwe University, Awka Anambra State, Nigeria. He has been Dean Students Affairs for 16 years and Dean of the Sandwich Programme for 2 years. He has a PhD in Church History.
Revd Dr Joseph Bilal
Revd Canon Dr Joseph Zebedayo Bilal has a BA and MA in Theology from the University of Bristol and a PhD from the London School of Theology, University of Middlesex. He lectures on Islam and other world religions, on peacebuilding and conflict resolution, as well as Anglicanism. He has represented the Episcopal Church of South Sudan at numerous conferences of the Anglican Communion, including the last Lambeth Conference and the latest Anglican Consultative Council in Dublin.
Revd Alex Frazer
Revd Alex Frazer has a Bachelor's Degree in Theology from George Whitefield College, South Africa, and a Master's in Theology from Uganda Christian University. He was a student at Bishop Gwynne College from 2014 to 2018. Revd Alex lectures in Spiritual Formation, Wisdom Literature and Introduction to the Old Testament.
Revd Paul Issa
Revd Paul Issa Leye completed a Bachelor’s Degree at Nile Theological College in Khartoum and a Masters of Divinity in the Asian Center for Theological Studies in South Korea. He is currently a PhD candidate in Theology at Uganda Christian University. After working as a parish priest in Khartoum for 10 years, Paul became the Principal of Bishop Ngalamu Theological College before joining the Bishop Gwynne School of Theology, initially as Academic Registrar and then as University Chaplain.
Dr Eeva John
Dr Eeva John is a lecturer in Practical Theology. She has a Masters in Biblical Hermeneutics from the London School of Theology and a doctorate in Divinity from Cambridge University. She has taught practical and contextual theology in a number of theological colleges in the Oxford, Bristol and Cambridge and has worked for the Church of England nationally, including coordinating the development of programmes in Ministerial Theology used by over 20 theological colleges in England.
